Russia not to mull Sberbank privatization in medium term
MOSCOW, Jan 29 (PRIME) -- Privatization of the Russian biggest lender Sberbank will not be considered in the medium term, President Vladimir Putin said on Friday at a meeting with Central Bank Chairwoman Elvira Nabiullina.
“I fully agree with you. We will not come back to this question in the middle term future,” Putin said.
Nabiullina said that the government’s ownership of a controlling stake in Sberbank is a cornerstone of people’s trust in the bank. “At the moment controlling interest must be kept,” she said.
Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev earlier offered to privatize Sberbank and the second biggest bank VTB in order to raise the capital of the entire banking system.
